Hoan Kiem Lake – The Shining Jewel of Hanoi’s Capital

A Lake with Many Names and Legends

Hoan Kiem Lake has had various names throughout history, including Ta Vong Lake, Luc Thuy Lake (Green Water Lake), and Thuy Quan Lake (Naval Training Lake). However, in the 15th century, it was renamed Hoan Kiem, meaning "Lake of the Returned Sword," based on the legend of King Le Thai To returning a sacred sword to the Golden Turtle. This mythical tale has elevated the lake’s significance, making it a treasured historical and cultural site.

The Beauty of Hoan Kiem Lake Through the Seasons

Hoan Kiem Lake is enchanting year-round. In spring, cherry blossoms and traditional festivals bring it to life. Summer’s cool breezes offer a refreshing escape from the heat. Autumn drapes the lake in poetic charm with its weeping willows, while winter lends a dreamy, misty atmosphere.

At the heart of the lake lies Turtle Tower, an architectural highlight built in 1884, blending French colonial and ancient Vietnamese styles. Surrounding the lake, visitors will find other renowned landmarks such as Hoa Phong Tower, But Tower, The Huc Bridge, Ngoc Son Temple, and Ba Kieu Temple.

A Vibrant Cultural Hub

To explore Hoan Kiem Lake, visitors can choose various modes of transport, including motorbikes, cyclos, electric cars, or simply walking to fully absorb the picturesque scenery. In recent years, the area has been transformed into a pedestrian zone on weekends, hosting exciting street performances and traditional folk games. Strolling through this lively space while indulging in Hanoi’s famous street food makes for an unforgettable experience.

For both locals and travelers, Hoan Kiem Lake remains a must-visit, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and modern vibrancy in the heart of Vietnam’s capital.
