On the night of December 27, 1972, a B-52 aircraft was brought down by Vietnamese air defense forces, with most of its fuselage and wings crashing into this lake. Over 50 years later, the wreckage remains in the middle of the lake, symbolizing the heroic victory of the people and military of Hanoi.
Often referred to as "B-52 Lake" by locals, Huu Tiep Lake has been recognized as a national historical site and attracts many domestic and international visitors. The lake serves as a powerful reminder of Vietnam’s resilience and sacrifice during wartime.
In 2021, due to environmental concerns and the deterioration of the site, Hanoi launched a restoration project to clean the lake and preserve the aircraft remains. After more than a year of renovations, the lake’s water quality and surrounding landscape have significantly improved, ensuring its continued role as a meaningful historical destination.
Huu Tiep Lake is not only a source of pride for the people of Ngoc Ha but also a symbol of the “Dien Bien Phu in the Air” victory, reminding future generations of the courage and determination of their ancestors in defending the nation.
